tom selleck
I had no idea until I read Tom Selleck’s IMDB bio this afternoon that he was George Lucas and Steven Spielberg’s first choice to play Indiana Jones, only he’d just been signed to Magnum PI and the series producers wouldn’t let him do it and so it went to Harrison Ford instead. Crazy!
Anyway, as we all know, Magnum PI took off in a very big way and soon enough Warner Bros took notice and gave Selleck the lead in an Indy-style movie, High Road to China. TheRaider.net seems to think pretty highly of it, but alas, it’s out of print and barely available on VHS.
Tom Selleck’s a member of and did an ad for the National Rifle Association. Rosie O’Donnell had him on her show to debate gun laws and it didn’t go very well. Cigar Afficionado had him on their cover and did a great interview with him about cigars, his libertarianism, and the strangeness of his career. He did a Celebrity Secrets skit for Late Night With Conan O’Brien a while back, it was okay but not half as funny as, um, Harrison Ford’s, Patrick Stewart’s or George Takei’s.
Also, those of you who are my age or older probably remember the Magnum PI theme as being totally kick ass. I couldn’t find an mp3 of it, alas but this midi version still rocks pretty hard. The Magnum PI theme, like many of the best TV theme songs ever written, was the work of composer Mike Post. Some of my favorites of his are the themes to Law & Order (my current ringtone; but who knows if he was responsible for the Chung! Chung!?), CHiPs, The A Team, LA Law, Doogie Howser, MD, NYPD Blue and the most recent incarnation of Dragnet. Post played guitar on Sonny & Cher’s I Got You, Babe, has five Grammys, and his song for Greatest American Hero is one of only a handful of TV themes to ever hit the top of the pop charts.
Hmm.. the rental place near me has a VHS tape of High Road to China. Maybe I’ll have to pick that up.
What do you mean, maybe?
(And while you’re at it, make me a copy!)
there’s a low-quality mp3 of the the theme here:
http://www.melaman2.com/tvshows/mp3/
I saw High Road IN THE THEATER because Magnum was my favorite show and I liked Indiana of course. It was so boring. I think the mom from MYSL is the love interest.
Magnum PI S1 just came out on dvd and has some OK extras.
The Indy Jones box set DVDs released (in the UK, at least) a few months back include a copy of TS’s screen test as one of the extras.
some people smoke, some people google tom selleck…
is there an mp3 file out there of mike’s current rendition of dragnet? i would really appreciate it!
thanks!
I would like this forwarded to Tom. I understand
he had been looking for property in or near Raton, New Mexico. I would like to discuss this with him, by e-mail or phone.

John Barry did the music for “High Road to China” and it was very good. He also did “Out of Africa”–he does great “flying” scores! Tom’s still the MAN!
Nine and 1/2 years is a long time to be out of the states, but a retreat brought out the need for a person to come to Eastern Europe to coordinate (a two year acommitment for short-term missions), the former Soviet Block countries.
Although we left a saddle building/restoration business behind, (and the T.V.), we have studied the news via internet and found great joy, when we have time to enjoy the better movies featuring you, Tom Selleck, beginning with the Sacketts and moving on to the Louis L’Amour ones and have watched at least ten times, Monte Walsh. Favorite lines, “nobody rides a horse like Monte Walsh” and “you have no idea how little I care!”
People in Eastern Europe gauge us by our movies and television presentations, and most are caught up by the materialism. How is it that you have preserved the better version of “America the Beautiful”, in protraying characters sans foul language, sex and have successfully carried the “good guy wins” theme?
God bless you,
Reita R. Hawthorne
what is tom selleck’s mail adress so i can send him a letter
I would like to email Tom Selleck. My mother is one of his biggest fans. She tells us all the time thats what she wants for all special occasions. Now my mother is in the hospital and she was told she has Lung Cancer. I was hoping that I could do something Special for her in her time of need. Maybe a Signed photo from him will make her day. Thank You in advance for your help in this matter. Bonnie Shramovich
Hello, Lia…
I had been looking for Mike Post’s theme to “Dragnet” for myself, as I am an avid fan of TV music, and did a search on AOL for it…I came across the entry, but didn’t realize it was someone else who in fact was looking for the file, and I thought it was you who wanted it. I just thought perhaps I should explain why you should receive this file out of nowhere…anyway, I like Mike Post’s TV themes a lot (including “Magnum P.I.”) and I hope you enjoy it. Happy Holidays! 🙂

My mom has dated him before! Yep, she was an extra on High Road to China, and i guess she just caught his eye ;). I guess she’s still not over him, she keeps old italian magazine clippings of him and old letters. I bet she would LOVE to know how to contact him =D
I have been in love with this man for about 30 years!! He just gets better with age…….I don’t get to see enough of him and wish he’d do more in the way of TV/movies. I’ve seen all the “Magnums” so many times I think I’ve got them memorized. I’ve loved almost ALL of his movies…there’s been just a few clunkers, but it wasn’t his fault!! I do a lot of eBay buying and he’s the #1 item I look for constantly. My love affair will continue for this “Sexiest Man of the Century”!!
Dear tom I am a big fan of yours. Would you ever consider running for president?? I think it would be great. sincerly doug glenn
Hi…
I’ve been a Tom Selleck fan ever since Magnum P.I. first aired. A number of years ago, while Magnum was still airing, I went to Hawaii; the Kahala area where the TV show was filmed, looking to see if I could possible get to meet him. But, unfortunately, he was back in L.A. filming “High Road to China”. I did meet the wife of one of the camera men who worked on the show. She happened to run the gift shop at the Kahala Hilton where I was staying. She told me lots of great things about Tom; she spoke very highly of him and of his graciousness and kindness. This made me want to meet him even more! She took my home address; back then, I was living in NJ. By the time I returned home, there was a large envelope waiting for me that contained an autographed photo of Tom, and one of John Hillerman, both greetings were “To Diana”. It was just terrific!
I now live in Northern L.A. County and I have small ranch with horses. I own and watch just about every Tom Selleck cowboy movie he ever made. He makes a kick-ass cowboy, for sure!
I would love to be able to write to him to tell him that he has aged like fine wine.
Thanks,

Would anyone know where I could get a real sign photo of Tom Selleck? I have a very good friend who has been on dialysis for over 10 years with many other health issure during this time and she has finally made piece that she can’t go on and she has stopped her treatments and has about 3-4 weeks left. Some one brought her a lobster and they wanted to know what she wanted with and she said Tom Selleck would be nice, but she had to choice a baked potato instead. So I thought this would be something special for her. Thanks for any help during this time in her life.
HEllo anyone know where i can get some mp3 files of the music from Magnum

Read Psalms 73, to understand.
Then Romans10:verse3. To get the
whole picture.
I believe I had a lengthy conversation with Tom Selleck on Pacific Beach boardwalk in San Diego last week around 9/20/06. He was walking his Akita, Zeus and at the end of our conversation he said to tell my husband I met Mr. Selleck after he shook my hand and said his name was Thomas. Anyway, I wanted to confirm that it actually was Tom Selleck and I to do that I need to know for sure that he has a white Akita named Zeus who weighs 150 pounds and is 11 years old. Does any one know? Thanks
I am writing to Tom Selleck on behalf of our family veternarian. I know Tom has a great interest in animals and our vet is quite extrordinary! She has a very modest clinic and does not have state of the art equipment, but she does have state of the art love for all the animals she treats including our 5 dogs! If people can’t afford to pay she charges practically nothing or nothing at all. She has raised 4 children by herself and they are in college now, funded mostly by her. She does little for herself, all her money and energy go into her children and her vet practice. she is truly dedicated to these two things in her life but would be so thrilled with a visit from Tom or an acknowledgement for her good work all these years with no recognition or reward for herself except of course the best of all…to take such good care of her children and “her animals”! Anything you could do would be so appreciated! Thank you………

I was wondering if there was any way I could get an autographed picture for my father, or how I could obtain a personalized autograph. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Hello, I hope this gets to Tom Selleck. I have never e-mailed or written to a celeb before. We were both Michiganders, before I joined the Navy, and Toto this is where I landed, Kansas! I just thought it would be nice to let you know that I love Magnum P.I., being disabled with Menieres disease, and stuck at home, it makes my day to watch, thanks!
I know your a busy person, but with all the people you know, or even yourself, would consider doing something to inform people how important it is to get the word out about my disease. I understand that you may never see this, but it makes me feel good to at least try, since no one has done anything about it. Funding is not important, since it is so rare.
For your consideration, sincerely Judy
Happy Holidays to you and yours!
I have been a fan of Mr. Selleck for the past 20 years and would simply like to let him know that he is still very much appreciated for his work in “Magnum” and the other films he has acomplished.
Thank you,

Dear Tom,
My family traced back our relatives and we figured out that you are our cousin. My name is Suzy and I am your long lost cousin. I know this how because my grandfathers family came from Poland. Their last name was not pronounceable so they changed it to Towers. My great grandfathers name was Lester Towers who lived in Detroit Michigan.
Dear Tom,
I am disappointed that I have not heard from you. I think you think that I am a loony, or a nut, but I’m not. I know i am only 11 but that doesn’t make me crazy. I just wanted to talk to my cousin.
Hi Tom,
I’m one of your biggest fans. I thorougly loved watching the series Magnum, P.I. What a great series…It was such a great combination of characters, drama, mystery, action, comedy and scenery. I still watch Magnum, P.I.s in rerun every chance I get and still enjoy them as much as I did back in the 1980s. Anyone aspiring to be an actor, writer, director, etc. should be a student of Magnum, P.I. I haven’t seen all of your movies…but I really enjoyed Lassiter and High Road To China. The element of mystery, danger and unpredictableness make for great movies and TV shows. By the way, I made a career of Naval Intelligence (Russian linguist) and can relate to many espisodes having elements of Navy life interweaved into the show. One of the best Magnum’s had to be “From Moscow To Maui” – what a show…very intense! I also especially liked the episode about the lady who wanted to intern her father’s ashes in the USS Arizona. Another great show!…plus many, many others. These Magnum, P.I.s help put life into perspective. Thanks for your great acting work and giving pleasure and enjoyment to so many millions of fans. P.S. If you could please send me an autograph via email, I would greatly appreciate it. Best Wishes In Everything…Sincerely, Tom Armstrong, tarmstr@us.ibm.com
I found this on another site, so I can’t vouch for its accuracy:

Tom,I know every one of your e-mails is from a fan of your work. I, however, admire the man himself. I always thought of you as the most handsome man with boyish charm, but it was only when I saw you on an interview some years ago that gave me a glimpse of the real you. You were playing volley ball. Up until then, I never saw you as someone other than a celebrity. But something about that interview brought you into a different light. The real guy behind all the hype was finally evident. Ever since then, I have wanted to meet you. Not because of your celebrity, but in spite of it. I would love to have coffee and just talk like 2 friends. No interviews, no starry eyes, no autographs(…well, maybe one of those). If you ever get a chance to read this, I would really appreciate your acknowledgement. Thanks, Barb

Hi Tom,
Thanks for coming to Cody, Wyoming a couple of years ago. I saw you then. I’m a fan and was stationed in Hawaii while you were filming Magnum. Saw you sometimes since I would drive through black point occasionally. I appreciate your stand on guns and enjoy your westerns and jessie stone series. Keep up the good work.
I once read that Tom Selleck was for free minds and free markets. He has often been mentioned in Libertarian Party circles as presidential material. But I would ask him this one tough question:
Would you be willing to spread the word about http://www.draftresistance.org? It’s a site dedicated to shattering the myths surrounding the selective slavery system and building mass civil disobedience to stop the draft before it starts!
Our banner on a website, printing and posting the anti-draft flyer or just telling friends would help.
Thanks!

Hi Tom
I work in a group home. One of my cients has short term memory and sometimes doesnt even remember our names. One day my supervisor was discussing her favorite actors and I asked my client….Who is your favorite actor….she surprised us big time by saying Tom Selleck…..she remembers her family and sometimes us but this is the first time I have ever heard her mention anyone else including the President. We were bowled over!. Is it possible to get a poster of you when you were Magnum PI? I dont think she remembers your newer television appearances. if so could you email me at gjeans50@yahoo.com? Thank You in Advance……also of course my Mother and I LOVE YOU!~

Hi Tom,
Just a note to say hi from michigan. I don’t have health issues and i’m not your long lost cousin. Just wanted to say thank you for standing up for what you believe in aka helping the little man without a voice in america. you’re the best !!
Just wanted to wish you a Happy Thanksgiving. (You’re doing a great job on “Las Vegas” as the mysterious A.J. Cooper.) I could say a lot of things that would just sound silly, but know that you are in my heart and I think of you with love every single day. To my #1 from his #1!! Always!!!
Dear Mr. Selleck,
I really apreciate the great body of work you have accomplished over the years and am enjoying you on Vegas. I would like to ask where did you get your cowboy hat on the show,or who made it?
Keep up the great work,my wife and I have enjoyed your work for years.

Dear Mr. Selleck
My Mom and I have been fans of yours ever since we saw you on the Dating game and the marlbrough guy on the signs. We have never missed a single episode of Magnum Piwe actually are watching Quiggley as I write. I understand you use to live in Aptos. we to have a house in Rio Del Mar. My mom has expressed in her most wildest dream before she dies her only request would to meet you and cook you dinner for you and your wife. I know you probly think I am some goofy stalker. Dear Mr. Selleck,
My name is Bobby Nimmo, and it is an Honor for me to introduce myself to you! I am an Disabled N.Y.P.D. Police Officer, and I would like to let you know that you are a Hero for me, and the cast that made up Magnum P.I. is just fabulous!!! Your series Magnum P.I. is my ALL TIME FAVORITE, and that goes for my friends and family also.
Your show brought back, Duty,Honor, and Country, and it made Conservative thinking and beliefs fashionable again!!! And your’s was the first show to portray the Viet Nam Vet in a Positive Light! And start to Thank the Viet Nam Vet for his terrible sacrifice, and the disgraceful way that He was treated by the Hippies and the Counter-Culture.
As you can see, I can go on and on about the subjects that I have presented here. I don’t want to take up any more of your time, but I would like to present an idea, that I hope that you will consider. It would be a great Honor gor me to speak to you again, nut I understand that you are busy, and have better things to do than to speak to a retired cop.
At any rate, it was just my hope that the Origional Cast of Magnum P.I., continuing their previous roles, and this to be put in a Movie, or a series of movies. Like whay was done with the origional “Star Trek” T.V. Show!
From what I see, of the Magnum P.I. series in syndication, and the popularity of the show overall, I think that this is a very viable idea! Aside from the fact, that I will be able to “Die and Go To Heaven”, if I could see “MY HERO” and his Show again!!! Please excuse my exhuberance for my hopes to see your show again!!!
sincerely,
Bobby Nimmo

Dear Tom,
I just love you and especially Magnum PI. I also love the Louie LaMour westerns you’ve made for TV in the recent past. Will you PLEASE make more of them? You have a wonderful persona as a cowboy. The other actors you choose like, the Carradine brothers and Sam Elliot are naturals also. Please consider doing more westerns for TV. Also maybe you’d like to think about a reunion for Magnum PI in the near future too.
No matter what you do you’re a wonderful actor, full of talent and very handsome. Thanks for your gift.
Love, Bev

Hello Mr. Selleck,
I would please like to know who the saddle maker was or where the saddles came from in your remake of “Monte Walsh”.
Thank you very much,
Randy Goff
Hi Tom,
I am a rope maker by hobby. If your interested, I would like to
show you how to make rope with a simple rope maker made int he
woods from a small branch of a tree. The actual rope is spun from
anything from horsehair-wool-long fiber weeds, take your pick.
It would seem something you would like to know as your movies
have some exposure to things like this.
Holler if i can help with this. pretty interesting.
Harry
Dear Mr. Selleck,
I have followed you career since Young and Restless. I became a Christian in 1979 and since that time I have prayed for you and your wife and family. I guess if I had one prayer I would like to have answered would be to meet you. I will continue to pray for you. I have a daughter named Hannah too, she just turned 15. Hope the Lord gives you His peace and His grace.
Anne
More cowboy movies Tom . I would love see you make some more , you do great job at it.

Hi Tom!
Do you remember me? ole friend from Cape Coral, Fl? it has been awhile sense we wrote to one another, I missed my favorite pen pal, I thought it was time to write. Alot of news to tell you about. I’ve been keeping up with you all these years, I never stoped being your friend. I just got back from Santa Rosa, Calif. to visit my cousin and her family, I go there every year to spend 5 weeks with them. I’m sorry I messed up the phone call with your asst.I hope she is still with you after all these years, she sounded like a really nice lady.
In case you do not remember me, I sent you a trading card once of a sports figure you said you had a hard time finding. I also sent you and Jillie baby gifts when Hannah was born, a little red dress. We wrote back and forth for about 6 years.I have one son, lots of news on that subject. My step-mom managed a 7-11 here in the Cape. Sorry we stoped writing to one another, I’m not sure how that happened, It has been awhile. W ay to long.
I saw your photo on the cover of”Cowboy and Indians” at a “Oliver’s” in Santa Rosa, and the wonderful lay out inside, Thats when I realized I missed my ole friend.
