{"id":2684,"date":"2003-01-31T23:57:44","date_gmt":"2003-02-01T04:57:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/lia.bulaong.com\/wp\/?p=2684"},"modified":"2003-01-31T23:57:44","modified_gmt":"2003-02-01T04:57:44","slug":"magdalene_laundries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lia.bulaong.com\/blog\/2003\/01\/magdalene_laundries\/","title":{"rendered":"magdalene laundries"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote>\n<p>Operated by the Sisters of the Magdalene Order, <a href=\"http:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/sections\/wnt\/DailyNews\/Ireland_abuse030126.html\">the laundries were virtual slave labor camps<\/a> for generations of young  thought to be unfit to live in Irish society.<\/p>\n<p> who had become pregnant, even from rape,  who were illegitimate, or orphaned, or just plain simple-minded,  who were too pretty and therefore in &#8220;moral danger&#8221; all ran the risk of being locked up and put to work, without pay, in profit-making, convent laundries, to &#8220;wash away their sins.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They were completely cut off from their families, and many lost touch with them forever.<\/p>\n<p>Stripped of their identities, the  were given numbers instead of names. They were forbidden to speak, except to pray.
